Vegan Fraternity Challenge!
During Week 3 of Winter Quarter, January 22-26th, two fraternities at UC Davis pledged to go Vegan. The week’s food supplies and events were funded by PEACE Club at UC Davis, People for the Elimination of Animal Cruelty through Education) and PETA2. PETA2 first debuted the Vegan Fraternity Challenge at Brown University in 2015 with Alpha Epsilon Pi (AEPi). UC Davis’ Vegan Fraternity Challenge (VFC) however was the first week long competition between two fraternities – with prizes given to the top scoring fraternity and the top three scoring individuals from each fraternity. The mission behind VFC is to deliver educational information on the benefits of a plant-based diet, highlighting health, environmental, and animal welfare.
The preliminary planning phase involved meeting with the Interfraternity Council and presenting the idea. One brother then volunteered from each of the two most interested fraternities to act as a liaison between PEACE and their fraternity. PEACE Club coordinators then met with in house members the weekend before VFC to hand out the VFC Program Packet and host a discussion with the brothers on how to make a seamless transition to their week’s Plant Based diet. The Sunday before, PEACE members and fraternity liaisons loaded up on groceries. The week’s food supplies came from Costco, Target, donations from plant based companies: Chao, Daiya, Field Roast, Follow Your Heart, Kite Hill, Miyoko’s, JUST (formerly Hampton Creek), and restaurants: Chipotle, Sun & Soil, and Evan’s Kitchen.
The events of the week included specialty cook nights, on campus and off campus events. Monday night was homemade pizza and Kahoot Trivia (@peaceucd). Tuesday was Vegan Bodybuilders talk and Q&A with Vegan Bros, Matt and Phil Letten, and Guilt Free TV’s Jeff Morgan with donated Taco Bell dinner, all Fresco. Wednesday was “Brave the Cage” on the quad hosted by Animal Place, followed by What the Health screening and Q&A with Dr. Michael Klaper with donated Veggie and Sofrita burritos from Chipotle. Thursday evening was Taste of Thai cook night and Earthlings screening, narrated by Joaquin Phoenix, to which PETA offered $5 to first 100 attendees. Friday was the celebratory BBQ and awards ceremony!
The week’s events displayed to the brothers that eating plant-based can be easy, is beneficial for your health, the environment and the animals. Using Cowspiracy numbers PEACE members calculated that going vegan for one week both fraternities, with a total of 33 participants, potentially saved: 181,000 gallons of water, 6,600 pounds of grain, 4,950 square feet of forest, 3,300 pounds of Carbon Dioxide, and 165 animal lives! The conversations between vegan and fraternity students initiated friendships and helped both parties experience the other’s perspective. Hearing some brothers at the end of the week, it is hopeful that they will cut down their daily consumption of animal products and introduce more plant based alternatives in the mix.
PEACE Club hopes to continue hosting VFC and help other university students bring it to their campus. The first step is to have a peta2 campus liaison! THANK YOU to peta2, PEACE members, businesses that gave food donations, Theta Chi and Theta Xi brothers for participating and bringing this challenge to life!
